The Campbell Group

  • Create a site design that meshes stylistically with a very sophisticated print identity
  • Ensure that web pages are Macintosh friendly to support a graphic design customer base
  • Develop a web application to allow Campbell Clients secure access to a keyword searchable database of media assets with high resolution cross-platform download capability
  • Plan for maintenance and scalability

V7 develops a website for high-end printer The Campbell Group in harmony with its existing print identity www.campbellgroup.on.ca. The new site features a secure client intranet linked to a dynamic image database of media assets.

The Campbell Group's award-winning printing and stylish identity dictated much of the look and feel throughout the site. V7 designers adapted the sophisticated patina of the Campbell Group's print identity to the web's more limited color palette. We were well aware that many potential customers would be viewing the site on the Macintosh, so we opted for a flexible table-based layout structure that would adapt to a broad range of screen sizes. All site pages feature a common navigational header that gives users a constant frame of reference.

The media asset management component posed a technical challenge that V7 solved with CG's prepress company, Colour Technologies. Using new image database technology, which was in beta through much of the site development process, V7 tested a dynamic server extension that provided full web search capability. V7 customized the database and designed HTML templates to format the query results with image thumbnails and associated file information. We coded dynamic email links that allowed users to request additional information about the image(s) they were viewing.

Multi-layered server security that combined usernames and passwords with IP restricted browsing completed the assignment and ensured that only authorized users would have access to the media collection. Since the site went live we have continued our R&D efforts in this area, yielding some exciting new possibilities for ecommerce application development. You can read about these developments in V7 tech item, The image database.
