Canada's prima ballerina, Karen Kain, has recently appeared in public service announcements produced for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Karen is a passionate spokesperson for breast cancer as some of her close friends are battling this disease. "The only way to stop breast cancer is to find a cure," said Kain. "Hopefully I can play a part in helping to raise funds to stop this disease in its tracks."

Special thanks to Karen Kain for making time available for the production and for her gracious presence in these powerful messages. We gratefully recognize the contribution of Lisa Pierce for getting the ball rolling on this important initiative.

Thanks also to the wonderful people at Marshall-Fenn Communications including Brenda Pergantes, Jim Kabrajee, Steve Rust, Doug Maugham, Michael Dixon and Sandy Cole who generously contributed their talent pro bono.

And, a round of applause for Maxx Productions including Harvey Sherman, J.J. Lyons, Doug Moen, Paul Tolton, Ken Porter, Barb Wallace and to Alex Eaton at Stealing Time Editing and Pirate Radio. Thank you all.

This year, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation celebrated its eighth annual CIBC Run for the Cure with its first ever Winners Weekend.

Top pledge generators from each of the 26 cities across Canada, who raised a grand total of $308,779.24, were guests of the National Sponsors for a Weekend for Two at the Sheraton Centre Hotel, Toronto.

Each top fundraiser was given a set of car keys but only one would start a brand new 1999 Ford Focus. Congratulations to winner Leslie McNabb from Nanaimo, BC. Leslie is a breast cancer survivor who is now facing a second battle with this disease, with courage and optimism.

In a move to reduce hard costs of the donation process, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation has become the first not-for-profit organization to provide instant e-tax receipts by e-mail.

Now, anybody who gives through the Foundation’s web site can receive an e-mail receipt that’s easy to download and acceptable to Revenue Canada.

The Foundation’s traditional mail process procedure was taxed to the limit following the overwhelming success of the Run for the Cure, which attracted 80,000 participants and raised a record $6.5 million from 190,000 donations.

According to Deborah Kroeger, Director, Information Technology, "Now, that our e-mail tax receipt system is up and running, the challenges we faced during the transition are behind us. Thanks to our donors for being so patient and understanding, this efficient system will allow us to give more money to medical research."

Application development costs were donated to the Foundation by Artez Information Services of Mississauga. Artez was able to leap the technical hurdles posed by Revenue Canada with a software package that has now transformed the administration of charitable organizations in North America.

Canadian Airlines, the exclusive national platinum sponsor of the CIBC Run for the Cure, has donated one Canadian Plus point for every dollar raised at this year's event to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. With funds still coming in, Canadian Airlines is optimistic that the grand total will reach $7 million and has generously presented 7 million points to the Foundation.

Barb Schwob-Vrolijk, national volunteer coordinator Canadian Airlines (left), Rob MacLean, VP sales for North America Canadian Airlines (inside right) and Ron Clark, Sr. VP sales and marketing for the National Post, present a cheque for seven million Canadian Plus Points to Gareth Seltzer, chair national funds development for the CBCF.

The CBCF will utilize the 7 million points to arrange air travel for women diagnosed with breast cancer who could not easily afford the expense of air travel for medical treatment. The number of donated points equals about 500 return trips country wide.

"Canadian Airlines is thrilled to make this donation to the Foundation," said Rob MacLean, Vice President Sales North American for Canadian Airlines. "We are hoping this donation will be helpful in easing the burden of those who suffer from breast cancer and the families who support them."

Information on the program, which is scheduled to start March 1st, 2000, will be available after January 3, 2000. Call 1-800-387-9816.

The National Board of Directors for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) owns the legal rights to the pink ribbon and has adopted it as the organization's official mark.

While the current logo, adopted by the board last August, incorporates the official mark of the foundation – that being the pink ribbon and the foundation name – it is, in fact, only an interim logo.

The marketing firm of Millward Brown is currently conducting a market analysis on a pro bono basis to assist in establishing a permanent logo design that would best represent the organization and its goals. Millward Brown will be submitting its recommendations to the National Board of Directors at the foundation's Annual General Meeting in August.

Colgate-Palmolive Canada Inc. will donate 50 cents to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) when consumers use a dollar-off "Fore The Cure" coupon to purchase any two Mennen Lady Speed Stick or Speed Stick deodorant products before Dec. 31, 2000.

The coupon is being presented in conjunction with two other offers -- a one-year subscription to Score Golf For Women magazine and an entry form to win a Lady Speed Stick Golf Makeover. The promotion features 1,300 point-of-purchase display stands set up in stores across the country (excluding Quebec) with the three-in-one coupon offer affixed to the header card.

Last year, the promotion raised approximately $8,000 for the CBCF and this year, Melanie Muldoon, Product Manager for Lady Speed Stick, is hopeful donations will reach the $10,000 level.

"The 'Fore The Cure' initiative offers real added value to our customer base being tied into a charity for women rather than just a promotion," said Muldoon. "Women in our target group seem very happy with the event."

In addition to the dollar-off coupon, consumers also have an opportunity to receive a year's subscription (3 issues) of Score Golf For Women for $5 and enter the Lady Speed Stick Golf Makeover contest. The grand prize includes: a set of Albany 250 Woods (1, 3 and 5 woods plus head covers); Albany 100 irons (4 through 9, plus pitching and sand wedge); Nancy Lopez Golf Debut putter; Nancy Lopez Roscoe golf bag; three dozen Nancy Lopez Golf DM2 golf balls; one pair of Dexter Motion Golf Shoes and a $300 (CDN) certificate towards Hyp Golf Clothing. The winner will also receive one free lesson at a local golf course.

Participants in the sixth Annual Great White North Dragon Boat Challenge will be battling more than just the elements and opposing race crews in this year's event -- they'll also be battling breast cancer, a disease that is expected to strike more than 19,000 Canadian women in 2000.

All proceeds from this year's races are earmarked for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) and will be used to support medical research, educational and awareness programs, diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

More than 100 recreational and elite dragon boat teams from Southern Ontario and the United States are expected to compete in this two-day fundraising event that takes place Sept. 16-17, 2000 at Toronto's Ontario Place.

Dragon boat racing teams consist of 20 paddlers plus a drummer at the bow and a crew member guiding the boat at the stern. Mixed crews must have a minimum of eight female paddlers for a total of no more than 20 paddlers per boat. All paddlers must be at least 16 years of age. In addition to mixed team events, organizers also arrange for competitions between all-women teams and Industry Challenge races.

Race format is a two-day regatta event with teams competing in elimination heats and quarter final showdowns on Saturday to determine seeding for divisional and category semi-finals and finals on Sunday. The six-lane course covers a distance of 500m (Industry Challenge races are 250m) with each team guaranteed a minimum of four races (two on Saturday, two on Sunday.) Race organizers outfit all teams with lifejackets, paddles and dragon boats.

The Dragon Boat Challenge has raised over $250,000 since 1994 in support of various Canadian charities. Prizes are awarded to top fundraising teams and top individual pledge collectors as well as all participants who raise a minimum of $100 in pledges. Racing awards are presented to the winners of each division championship and consolation final. Prizes are also awarded to Industry Challenge winners.

For teams registering on or before July 17, 2000, the entry fee is $1,177 and includes five practice sessions. Entry fees for teams registering after July 17, 2000 are $1,284 with four practice sessions. (All fees include GST.) To qualify for the early registration discount and additional practice sessions, registration forms and entry fees must be received by 5 p.m. on July 17, 2000.

For more information regarding this and other dragon boat racing events, visit the Great White North Dragon Boat web site at www.dragon-boat.com or contact race organizers at (416) 962-8899.

The left side of the coin features a ribbon which represents various causes (i.e. breast cancer, AIDS, etc.) related to the world of medicine and, on the right, the caduceus symbol signifying the ongoing work being done in each particular field.

The mint is also providing limited edition sets of the complete 2000 Millennium series as a first level incentive prize for this year's race participants. Other categories in addition to April's Health coin include: Pride, Ingenuity, Achievement, Natural Legacy, Harmony, Celebration, Family, Wisdom, Creativity, Freedom and Community.

Wittnauer International, distributors of fine Swiss watches since 1880, is a new national sponsor of the CIBC Run For the Cure, and will provide a special incentive prize for all team captains whose team brings in donations of $5,000 or more.

Marketing Director, Lynda Payne, said the company is offering qualifying team captains a choice of either a ladies' or man's Trieste two-tone bracelet watch, powered by a "super accurate Swiss Quartz Movement" and covered by Wittnauer's "Buckle-to-Buckle" one-year warranty.

"Wittnauer International is both very excited and extremely proud to be involved as an official sponsor of the CBCF and the Run For The Cure. Wittnauer supports this fundraising effort 100 per cent. It is our hope to involve our employees at our Brampton, Ontario office, as well as our sales representatives across Canada, and to reach out to our retail dealers and their employees, so that everyone takes part at some level," she said.

The company "takes pride" in the knowledge that it is "a part of this Canada-wide endeavour" to raise funds for research and education and "ultimately find a cure" for this devastating disease, Payne added.
